Good beginner or ‘guest’ camping option. It does the job sufficiently enough., August 28, 2016

A bit of background on me so you know I’m speaking from experience with these type products. I have a lot of hammocks I like camping in them. For camping I have 2 Hennesseys (an Explorer Lite for myself and a cub for my 6yr old). I have a single and double parachute hammock, like you can find all over amazon, I use for relaxing and random sojurns. I decided to give this mosquito ‘jungle’ style hammock a try to round out the collection – figured it might serve as a ‘guest’ hammock or in an emergency sitch.

I also have a lot of different hammock straps. The basic ones from Hennessy, some shorter ‘daisy chain’ versions (one actually from Russee) and 2 of the 9 foot long E.N.O. (Eagle’s Nest Outfitters) copies from China.

First, let’s start with the good. This is pretty light and I’d assume if all you are dealing with is mosquitos you should be good – it’ll fullfill those needs. This netting isn’t no-see-um sized, however, so if you’re up north you may need to be sure of the bugs you’re going to be contending with. Note that with any single bottom hammock you will want to spray some Deet or pyrethrin ‘clothing’ spray on the hammock and let that dry for a few hours before you hang in bug infested areas. Bugs can still get you through the hammock if you’re laying directly on the fabric (if you’re on a blanket or something else you’ll likely be fine). The price for this hammock is certainly right for a basic overnight with mosquitoes.

Now for some bad things. The tree straps this comes with are basically useless. They’re just two lengths of nylon, no eyelets, nothing. You have to tie a knot in both ends yourself which makes them very short, thus I was unable to use them for my testing setup. Furthermore, in my test I only have the two trees and they are pretty far apart – I was using the ENO copy tree straps to hang from. The ropes it comes with a literally as short as possible. If the ropes were longer (like 2 feet longer on each side) I could have tied the netting tie-outs in a prusik and attached them to the actual hammock rope, likely getting the netting much tighter. The way the netting is set out from you requires that either you’re close to the trees you’re using or that you’ve got branches or bushes nearby to anchor the 2 ropes that stretch the hammock out. I had to use the straps themselves to line out the netting which was pretty subpar but IT DID WORK. In this situation, there was just too much netting and hung down almost touching me but it wasn’t touching. It wasn’t ideal, but it would do the job to keep bugs off of you.

Some notes on the quality. This comes with double sided zippers, but only one of my zippers was actually 2 sided. The stitching is pretty uneven also, but seemed solid enough – just not tidy.

This is a decent option if you’re a once a year hammock camper or are unsure if you’re going to like it and just want to see how you feel about hammock camping. Note, however, that while you’ll be getting a hammock experience you won’t be getting the much MUCH better asymmetrical parallelogram experience that allows you to sleep flat instead of curved like with regular rectangular hammocks, so don’t judge all books by this cover.

Customer Video Review Length:: 2:20 Mins

I am a cub scout leader and enjoy camping. Every time I bring my hammocks on a trip they are an instant hit. Its easy to see why. They are light, portable, comfortable, and functional. If you are not familiar with gathered end hammocks there are a ton of resources online. Sure you could find somewhere to just rig this up but there is a bit more to it. From proper hanging, to the way you lay. Its not hard to figure out. Before you do anything I would STRONGLY suggest buying some hanging straps. They are inexpensive, easy to use, and not only will it make your hammock experience easier they will save the trees. Many parks prohibit hanging anything from trees because of irresponsible individuals damaging trees by hanging things from them usually using rope that damages the tree. The hanging straps protect the tree and are easier and much more responsible. I slept in this over the weekend and was glad to be bug free. Full disclosure this was provided to me by the seller at a discount to review. I hope the video helps. Please leave a comment if you have any questions. Thanks!!

Cool Hammock, Wrong Color, June 23, 2016

The hammock is awesome. There is nothing wrong with it at all, however I was sent a bright pink and blue one instead of the OD green I had requested. Its not that big of a deal though. The hammock works great. The only complaint that I will say is that it kind of gets a little hot with the underneath part. I am a big guy and it still as a ton of fabric underneath, so much that it could completely cover me up. I think it would have been better with just a little bit less and just a stronger fabric. Thats very minor compared to how cool this hammock is. Like I said, I am a big big guy, almost 275lbs. It holds me just fine. That and no bugs. Very cool hammock, but you kind of surprised me with the color.
