Pick this over Jawbone Era., July 16, 2014

I previously owned a Jawbone Era and will compare these two items.

Jawbone Era has 4 Hours of life; Plantronics M165 has 8 Hours of life.

While receiving calls: Jawbone reads out the phone number, then you can press the button to answer; Plantronics just says “answer or ignore” and its up to you to say either word to answer the phone or not. You don’t need to press a button which is a nice feature people who cook and touch raw meat, or cannot touch the button because your hands are tied up.

Tracking: I really love the app you can download onto your smartphone for Plantronics. If you forget your bluetooth, maybe at a friend’s or relative’s house but aren’t sure, you can open the app on your phone and use the GPS signal. Also, if you misplaced it somewhere in your room but cannot find it, the app allows you to send a Tone to the bluetooth so you can hear it beep to help you find it.

Plantronics app also has a battery tracker for your bluetooth which shows exactly how much life you have left.

Sound: Both sound very clear. not much to say.
Mic: Jawbone has a Better background noise cancellation built in than Plantronics. However, this Plantronics does have a solid one built into it also. Both bluetooth devices are mics that are solid enough for people on the other end to hear me speak in a regular tone (no need to speak loud).

While i did like Jawbone Era, I would recommend the Plantronics M165 based on battery life and the App on the smartphone. Both are very solid as far as being a Bluetooth device. However, the features on the Plantronics and the Price of it overshadows the Jawbone Era.

Nice headset, voice commands can be a bit difficult, June 5, 2014

I’ve had a bunch of headsets from Plantronics (including the Voyager Pro and Legend), Jawbone, Blueant and Motorola over the past decade or so, and this one is probably the best I’ve tried overall. It is relatively small, is lightweight and is very comfortable (yeah, I really do forget I have it on my ear) and sound quality is excellent.

Talk time is at least 7 hours (several times I’ve talked for a couple of hours during telecons, and it still tells me I have 6 hours left… thanks for the bonus hours Plantronics!). In fact I don’t think I’ve ever run it down in a single day, and since I plug it in every night, I never really have to worry about its charging status.

Range is at least 50 feet or so, including outside of my stone/stucco house when I leave my work phone inside the house after business hours. Pretty impressive. But make sure you turn it off when you take it off. I’ve been outside the house when my personal phone rang, and couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t answer the phone… when I actually had answered, but the headset 40 feet away in the house had picked up the call, so I couldn’t communicate with the caller until I pressed the speaker button.

So why only 4 stars? Because the voice recognition can be a bit iffy. When a call comes in, the headset politely asks me if I want to answer or ignore. When I clearly say “answer” in a normal tone of voice, it almost always ignores me. When I say “answer” in a slightly louder tone, it usually ignores me. When I yell “answer” in a voice that would definitely cause people in a room to frown, it responds about half the time, When I scream at the top of my lungs, holding the headset flush against my face, it usually picks up. But not always. This problem makes using my voice to answer the phone pretty much impossible in any public place.

I also have some issues getting it to start a voice command sequence. I push the button in, and it boops back at me, and the phone’s voice command sequence is supposed to start. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. I never had this problem with a Jawbone Icon, and I’ve had 3 or 4 of those.

These aren’t major problems, but they are enough to knock off a star. Nonetheless, I would still buy one of these again, before I’d buy another Jawbone Icon (the Icons don’t stay on my ear as well, the earloops are always falling off, sound quality and range aren’t anywhere near as good), or Motorola (the Moto booms break really easily if you put the headset in your pocket). It is more comfortable to wear than the Plantronics Voyager Pro and/or Legend. Overall, a very nice product for the Amazon price.

The M165 is even better than Plantronics’ own flagship product!, January 21, 2014

I needed to replace the Plantronics Discovery 975 Bluetooth Headset – Retail Packaging – Graphite I had previously bought from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002JIMZU4) and took a chance on the Plantronics M165 Marque 2.

Boy, am I glad I did!

If you like the Plantronics ear gel fittings (I think they are great), this is definitely the product to own. Here are the ways in which the M165 beats the 975:

    a) Quality of Sound. Though I could always hear the other caller quite well on the 975, for years people have told me of the “tinny” and/or noisy quality at my end of the call. This all disappeared with the M165. People have commented that occasionally it now sounds like I am on a landline – even if I happen to be driving on a noisy highway.

    b) Audio Streaming. I can now navigate with my smartphone with ease because I no longer have to strain to listen the smallish speakers on my smartphone. The M165 pumps everything right to the earpiece with crystal clarity and it’s fantastic. (If I wanted, I can also listen to music off my smartphone this way, but there is too much compression to really enjoy it.) The 975 cannot stream.

    c) Pairing. For whatever reason, the 975 takes longer to pair with my smartphone, sometimes as much as a minute. In contrast, the M165 pairs essentially immediately. Turn it on and it’s connected!

    d) General User Experience. The M165 hands down is an easier earpiece to use. It has an on/off switch (unlike the on/off button of the 975) making the on/off state of the M165 immediately apparently to the eye. The earpiece cues you with status info over the set. As a result, I can hear, from a synthesized voice, if (a) I’m connected to the smartphone and (b) how much talk time I have. There are no codes and beeps to memorize to understand the state of the earpiece, as on the 975.

    e) Battery life. The 975 has a convenience chargercase which the M165 lacks. I don’t miss it, however, because the M165 has a superior talk time (up to 7 hours) and announces how much battery life is left when it is turned on! I am therefore never in danger of running out of battery.

Happily, the same ear gel pieces for the 975 also fit the M165 so Plantronics shows a loyalty to their customers with this interchangeability.

The M165 is so small, I use an old pill bottle as a tiny, crushresistant case which is smaller (and cheaper) than the bluetooth cases you can find on Amazon.

I’ve used various Plantronics bluetooth sets for years now and this one finally got it right in terms of both audio quality and user features. AND it’s cheaper than their old flagship product!
